The Commune of Bologna built Palazzo Re Enzo from 1244 to 1246 as an extension of the nearby Palazzo del Podestà, which had grown too small. It was first called the Palatium Novum, or New Palace. The article names no architect for the original work. Antonio di Vincenzo finished the Sala dei Trecento in 1386.
The palace takes its name from Enzio of Sardinia, a son of Frederick II, who was held prisoner here from 1249 until his death in 1272. Giovanni Giacomo Dotti largely renovated the top floor in 1771.
Alfonso Rubbiani led a restoration in 1905, and the article says the current Gothic appearance dates from then, not from the original build. The palace now hosts cultural events and exhibitions.
