Francesco Azzurri, a Roman architect, designed the current building. Construction began on May 17, 1884 and ended in 1894, with the inauguration on September 30, 1894. It replaced the Domus Magna Comunis, built in the 14th century. The main section has battlements over corbels, and the clock tower repeats the arrangement. The article says the design resembles Florence's Palazzo Vecchio at a much smaller scale. It names no materials.
The building changed little for about a century. Concerns over safety and function then led to a complex restoration by Gae Aulenti, inaugurated on September 30, 1996.
It is the city hall of San Marino and the seat of the Captains Regent, the Grand and General Council, the Council of XII and the Congress of State.
