Alessandro Farnese, later Pope Paul III, was the client. The article dates the design to 1517 in the lead and the start of construction to 1515 in the body. Antonio da Sangallo the Younger was the first architect. The Sack of Rome in 1527 interrupted the work. The style is High Renaissance.

Michelangelo revised the central window in 1541 and added the projecting cornice that throws a deep shadow over the facade. The piano nobile windows alternate triangular and segmental pediments, and the courtyard uses ascending Doric, Ionic and Corinthian orders. Giacomo della Porta finished the Tiber facade in 1589.

Annibale Carracci painted The Loves of the Gods from 1597 to 1608. The palace is now the French embassy. The article's accounts of ownership conflict on the 1874 and 1936 transfers.
