Andrea Palladio designed the Palazzo Barbaran da Porto in Vicenza in 1569 for the nobleman Montano Barbarano, and it was built between 1570 and 1575. The site included several existing family houses, which shaped the design, and Barbarano later bought an adjoining house, which made the entrance portal asymmetrical. The design draws on the Theatre of Marcellus in Rome.
A four-columned atrium on the ground floor joins two former building lots. The interior has three aisles and Ionic columns, with an unusual Ionic capital based on the Temple of Saturn in the Roman Forum. Giovanni Battista Zelotti, Anselmo Canera and Andrea Vicentino provided the decoration, with stuccowork by Lorenzo Rubini and then his son Agostino.
It is the only large city palace Palladio completed in its entirety, and it is part of a UNESCO site. It now houses the Palladio Museum.
