Santiago Calatrava, born in Valencia, designed the opera house as the last major structure of the City of Arts and Sciences, a concept begun in 1995. A joint venture of Dragados and Necso built it. It opened on October 8, 2005, and staged its first opera on October 25, 2006. The article does not label the style, and describes a metallic, curved-roof structure.

It has 14 stories above ground and three below, and stands 246 feet (75 m) tall, which the article calls the tallest opera house in the world. The roof is 755 feet (230 m) long, and the Main Hall seats 1,470. A stage platform collapsed in December 2006, and floods in November 2007 damaged the lower floors.

It is an opera house and performing arts center. The article does not name an owner.
