Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, began the medieval palace in 1364, and the Tour de Bar was completed in 1365. The Tour de Philippe le Bon was finished in 1455. The article credits Jules Hardouin-Mansart with the neoclassical complex, though the courtyard of 1784 and the Salle de Flore of 1786 came decades after his death in 1708. Jacques Gabriel designed the Grand Escalier of 1737. The porticos use Doric columns.

The Sainte-Chapelle was demolished in 1802, after the Revolution. René of Anjou was held in the Tour de Bar from 1431 to 1437.

Today the palace houses Dijon's city hall and the Musée des Beaux-Arts. It was designated a monument historique in 1926.
