Wooden fortifications stood here before the Mongol invasion of 1241 destroyed them. The town passed to the Ostrogski family from 1386, and the article says they built the castle, which was the key stronghold of their house. Two towers were built in the second half of the 15th and early 16th centuries, both of sandstone. The article names no architect.
The southern and eastern sides rise from a cliff about 66 feet (20 m) high. The Belltower was added in 1905, and the complex has four main structures. The article calls the castle a ruin yet says it retains medieval architecture.
The Guard Tower houses the Ostroh Local History Museum, and the Lutsk Tower has held a book museum since 1985. It is a Monument of National Significance of Ukraine.
