Saint Basil of Ostrog, the Metropolitan of Herzegovina, founded the monastery in the early 17th century, and it first appears on a map of Montenegro dated 1640. He died there in 1671. The infobox says 17th century.

It is built high in the rock of Ostroška Greda against an almost vertical cliff. The Upper Monastery holds the Church of the Presentation, a cave church with Basil's relics, and the cave Church of the Holy Cross, painted by the master Radul with frescoes applied directly to the rock. The Lower Monastery has the Church of the Holy Trinity of 1824. The article gives no dimensions or materials.

A fire destroyed most of the complex before the 1923 to 1926 reconstruction, but the two cave churches survived. Pilgrims traditionally walk about 2 miles (3 km) from the lower to the upper monastery barefoot. The article gives annual visitors as 1 to 1.2 million in one place and over 100,000 in another.
