John Engh's "Green Light" plan won the 1946 architecture contest for the station. Work began in 1979, and the Oslo Tunnel opened in 1980. The article names no firm, style or materials. The text says King Olav V officially opened the station on May 30, 1980, and it was taken into use on June 1, 1980, but the infobox gives the opening year as 1987.
It was built on the site of the older Oslo Ø station, and the original Oslo Ø building was kept. The station now has two buildings, each with a large shopping center. It has 19 tracks, 12 of which connect to the Oslo Tunnel.
Bane NOR operates the station, and its real estate subsidiary owns it. It stands at Jernbanetorget and is served by the metro, trams and buses. Long-distance buses leave from the bus terminal about 650 feet (200 m) away.
