The oldest part, a defense tower, was erected in the latter half of the 13th century, according to the text. It was probably built under King Magnus IV, and the infobox gives the 14th century as the start. A predecessor fortress was captured by Albrecht von Mecklenburg in 1364, and the tower was enlarged in the 14th century.
The Vasa royal family expanded it, and King Charles IX rebuilt the medieval fortification into a Renaissance castle. It was finally rebuilt about 1900. The infobox lists stone as the material and names a master builder, Ludvig, with others, though the body does not mention them. The article gives no dimensions.
It has been the residence of the governor of Örebro County since 1764. The National Property Board owns it, and some rooms serve as classrooms.
