Frankfurt's first permanent theater, the Comoedienhaus, opened in 1782. The first representative opera house opened at Opernplatz in 1880 with Mozart's Don Giovanni. The article says it was damaged in air raids in January and March 1944 and then almost completely destroyed.
A new house for opera and drama, under one roof, was completed in 1963 at what is now Willy-Brandt-Platz. A stage fire in November 1987 destroyed the stage, and the opera house reopened in April 1991 after being rebuilt. The article does not name an architect or describe the style.
The opera house seats 1,369. Georg Solti served as music director from 1952 to 1961, and Michael Gielen's era from 1977 to 1987 brought international recognition. Opernwelt has named the company Opera House of the Year eight times.
