David Childs of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill designed the tower for a syndicate led by William Zeckendorf Jr. Groundbreaking was on November 12, 1986, it topped out on May 20, 1988, and the infobox gives completion in June 1989. The infobox says Postmodernism, while the text describes Art Deco-inspired classical details and a facade reminiscent of Gothic Revival.

It has 50 stories and rises 778 feet (237 m) to the roof, under a copper pyramid 150 feet (46 m) tall. The base is gray-purple granite, and the walls are maize-colored brick. The materials came from many countries, including structural steel from Luxembourg.

The plaza shrank by 10 percent in 2002 under a lawsuit settlement. The article describes conflicting ownership and says lenders began foreclosure in February 2026.
