Roy Allen of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill designed the tower for U.S. Steel, with Turner Construction as contractor. It replaced the Singer Building and the City Investing Building, demolished in 1967 and 1968. Construction ran from 1969, completed in 1972 in the infobox and 1973 in the text, and the cost was 120 million dollars. The style is International. The facade is black with an exposed structural steel frame.
It has 54 floors, rises 743 feet (226 m), and holds roughly 2.3 million square feet. A major renovation in 1989 created a new lobby and elevator system. The September 11 attacks caused significant facade damage, and it reopened on October 24, 2001.
Brookfield bought it in 2001 for 432 million dollars, and Blackstone acquired 49 percent in December 2017. A basement connection leads to Fulton Center.
