The theater opened in 1818 as the Royal Coburg Theatre and was renamed the Royal Victoria Theatre in 1833. Jethro Thomas Robinson rebuilt it in 1871 in the style of the Alhambra Music Hall, and it reopened as the Royal Victoria Palace. In 1880 Emma Cons converted it into the Royal Victoria Hall and Coffee Tavern.
Morley College shared the premises until the 1920s. The Blitz damaged the theater in 1940, and it reopened in 1950 and was listed Grade II* in 1951. The body gives a capacity of 1,000.
Ed Mirvish bought the building at auction in June 1982 for £550,000 and spent CA$3.9 million restoring it to its 1881 appearance. Only the outer walls survived, and it reopened on October 31, 1983. The article names no architect for that work.
