King Afonso Henriques financed the new cathedral in 1139, after the Battle of Ourique, and Bishop Miguel Salomão helped pay for the works. The design is credited to Master Robert, possibly French, who also directed Lisbon Cathedral, and Master Bernard supervised the work. King Sancho I was crowned in the new cathedral in 1185, and the basic building was finished in the early 13th century. The cloister was begun in 1218. The style is predominantly Romanesque, with Arabic influences, and later Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque additions. The article does not name the main building stone.
João de Ruão built the Renaissance Porta Especiosa in the 1530s, and Flemish artists carved the main-chapel retable between 1498 and 1502. The bishopric moved to the former Jesuit church in 1772.
It is a parish church today. The article gives no visiting details.
