Hermann Eggert and Gustav Halmhuber designed Hanover's New Town Hall. Construction began in 1901, and the building opened on June 20, 1913, after about twelve years of work. It cost 10 million marks. The article describes it as an eclectic, castle-like design from the era of Wilhelm II, set within the Maschpark.
The dome and observation platform bring the height to 321 feet (97.7 meters), and the main hall is 125 feet (38 meters) high. The foundation rests on 6,026 beech piles. A famous dome lift follows the parabolic curve of the dome. It climbs a 164-foot (50-meter) shaft at up to 17 degrees, and a new lift was installed in winter 2007 and 2008.
The state of Lower Saxony was proclaimed in the hall in 1946. The building is the seat of the city administration.
