In 1926 the East Indian Railway Company approved a single-story building with one platform, which grew into the station. Construction of the current building began by 1955 at a cost of 20 lakh rupees, and it was inaugurated on April 16, 1956. The article names no architect, client or style.

It has 16 platforms and 20 tracks, and the platform count rose from 12 to 16 at an unstated date. The concrete exterior was clad in sandstone for the 1982 Asian Games and in aluminum for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. A new three-story building facing Ajmeri Gate, about 97,000 square feet (9,000 m²), opened in September 2009.

Indian Railways operates it for the Ministry of Railways. A 242-meter skywalk joins it to the Yellow Line and Airport Express metro lines. A redevelopment planned in four phases targets January 2029.
