Bishop Franz-Josef Rudigier began plans in 1855, and Vincenz Statz, master builder of the Cologne archdiocese, drew them. The first stone was laid on May 1, 1862, and Bishop Johannes Maria Gföllner consecrated it in 1924. It is Neo-Gothic and follows French High Gothic plans.
It is 430 feet (130 m) long and holds about 20,000 people. The height is 443 feet (135 m) in the infobox and 134.6 meters in the text. A taller spire was not approved, because no building in Austria-Hungary could exceed the south tower of St. Stephen's in Vienna. The article names no materials.
Stained glass damaged in World War II was partly replaced with modern windows. A 1968 organ and seven bells cast in 1901 are the main fittings. It is the cathedral of the Diocese of Linz.
