Martin Grünberg designed the first church, built from 1701 to 1708 with Giovanni Simonetti in charge of construction. It had a pentagonal footprint with semicircular apses, and the Prince-Elector at first provided only for a Calvinist congregation. Carl von Gontard designed the tower in 1780. After the unfinished tower collapsed, Georg Christian Unger completed it between 1781 and 1785, modeled on the Panthéon in Paris.
Johann Wilhelm Schwedler designed a new pentagonal prayer hall in the neobaroque style, built from 1881 to 1882. The tower follows the Palladian tradition. The 1943 bombing of Berlin almost completely destroyed the church.
The exterior was rebuilt from 1977 to 1981. The infobox gives the rebuilding as finished in 1988, while the text says 1983 to 1996. The German government owns it, and it reopened in 1996 as the Bundestag's museum on parliamentary history.
