The first cathedral began in the spring of 1029, though the infobox gives 1028, and was consecrated in 1044 to Saints Peter and Paul. Bishop Engelhard led a rebuilding from about 1210. The cathedral is late Romanesque with early and high Gothic additions. The early Gothic west choir was probably finished by 1260, and the high Gothic east choir was built around 1330. The article names no architect.
The cathedral is a double-choir, three-aisled basilica with a tower at each end, so visitors enter from the side. Twelve life-sized donor figures in the west choir were carved in the mid-13th century from Grillenburg sandstone and are attributed to the Naumburg Master. The article calls the figures and the west rood screen among the most important works of early Gothic art in Germany.
UNESCO listed the cathedral on July 1, 2018. It stands on a rock about 82 feet (25 m) above the Saale.
