King Maximilian I of Bavaria commissioned the first theater because the Cuvilliés Theatre had too little space. Karl von Fischer designed it, and construction began on October 26, 1811, stopped in 1813 for lack of money, and finished with an opening on October 12, 1818. It burned on January 14, 1823. Leo von Klenze built the second theater, in neoclassical style with Neo-Grec features and Corinthian columns, and an air raid gutted it on October 3, 1943.
Gerhard Moritz Graubner recreated Fischer's design for the present theater, which opened on November 21, 1963. The auditorium has about 2,100 seats, and the article says the consistent use of wood gives it excellent acoustics. The stage covers 2,500 square meters, the third largest in Europe.
It is home to the Bavarian State Opera, the Bavarian State Orchestra and the Bavarian State Ballet.
