The current station building is the twin-tower JR Central Towers, with 51 and 53 floors. The article names no architect, style or materials. It says the towers were completed in 1999, and the history section gives an opening of December 4, 1999 while the architecture section says May 2000. The floor area is 4.5 million square feet (420,000 m²), or 410,000 m² in the introduction, and the cost was about 200 billion yen. Guinness World Records listed it as the largest station building in 2002, a category since abolished.

Earlier stations came first. A wooden station of 1886 collapsed in the 1891 Mino-Owari earthquake. A reinforced-concrete building opened on February 1, 1937, was damaged by wartime bombing, and served until 1993.

JR Central has operated the station since 1987. It has six island platforms for 12 tracks, two for the Tōkaidō Shinkansen, and a bus terminal with 11 boarding spots.
