The Museum of Modern Art was established on November 7, 1929, in six rooms on the 12th floor of the Heckscher Building at 11 West 53rd Street. Philip Johnson redesigned the garden in 1953 as the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden. In 1983 the museum more than doubled its gallery space alongside the 56-story Museum Tower, designed by César Pelli.

Yoshio Taniguchi's redesign reopened on November 20, 2004, and nearly doubled exhibition and program space, to 630,000 square feet (58,500 sq m). The Midtown renovation cost $425 million, and the total project cost $858 million. Diller Scofidio + Renfro, with Gensler, later planned an expansion. Its 2019 renovation added 47,000 square feet (4,400 sq m) of galleries, for a total floor area of 708,000 square feet (65,800 sq m).

The museum holds more than 150,000 pieces, and 2,839,509 people visited in 2023.
