The museum occupies five adjoining medieval palaces on Carrer de Montcada, built in the 13th and 14th centuries in the Gothic civil Catalan style. The article does not name the original builders. Each building is arranged around a courtyard with an exterior staircase, and the total area is 114,400 square feet (10,628 m²).
Palau Aguilar was the first, bought by the city council in 1953, and the museum opened on March 9, 1963. Palau Baró de Castellet joined in 1970, and Palau Meca in 1982 by one account and 1985 by another. A 1999 extension took in Casa Mauri and Palau Finestres, adding 3,400 square meters.
