Duke Moritz of Saxony had a hunting lodge built from 1542 to 1546. Elector John George II extended it from 1661 to 1671 and added a chapel designed by Wolf Caspar von Klengel, which the article calls early Baroque. From 1723 to 1733 Augustus the Strong remodeled the castle as a country seat with Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann and Zacharias Longuelune, adding a formal park, ponds and a game preserve.
The castle has four round towers and stands on a symmetrical artificial island. The large pond around it was built from 1723 to 1733 from four smaller ponds.
The interiors include 17th-century gilded leather wall coverings and silver furniture modeled on Versailles. The Feather Room bed has about a million feathers woven into the canvas. The Little Pheasant Castle, built from 1770 to 1776, is called Chinese-style in one passage and Rococo in another. The article gives no visiting details.
