The roots of Montjuïc Castle date from 1640, when the foundation stone of a basic fortification was laid. The first battle of the Catalan Revolt took place here in January 1641, when Catalan forces defeated a Spanish army. New bastions and battlements were added in 1694, and the fortress became a castle. British forces captured it in 1705.
The engineer Giovanni Antonio Medrano drew up the castle design in 1730. Juan Martín Cermeño demolished the old fort in 1751 and built the current structure. Major works from 1779 to 1799 finalized its shape, and it held 120 cannons. The article gives no style or materials.
Lluís Companys, former president of the Generalitat, was executed there in 1940. The castle passed to Barcelona City Council in April 2007.
