The site was given to Franciscan followers in 1224. King Ottokar II of Bohemia laid the foundation stone in 1276, the Ludwig choir was built from 1316 to 1328, and construction finished in 1350. The builders are unknown, but the article says Jacobus Parisiensis, confessor to Duke Albrecht II, is commonly credited as architect.

The article calls the style Gothic, following the pattern of French cathedral architecture. It is 148 feet (45 meters) long and 177 feet (54 meters) high. Inside is a life-sized mosaic copy of Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper, and a Carrara marble Madonna by Antonio Rossellino.

Joseph II closed it in 1782 and gave it to the Italians. Since 2022 it has been operated by the Society of Saint Pius X, which is not in full communion with the Holy See.
