Mimar Sinan designed the mosque for Mihrimah Sultan, daughter of Suleiman the Magnificent and Hürrem Sultan. Surviving manuscripts show that work began in 1563 and was completed by 1570, and there is no foundation inscription.
The plan is a cube topped by a half-sphere dome, with multi-windowed tympana on all four sides and four corner towers supporting the dome. The infobox gives the dome's outer size as 66 feet (20 m) across and 121 feet (37 m) high. Windows cover much of the wall, making it one of the lightest interiors of any of Sinan's works. Granite and marble are the materials.
Arasta shops beneath the terrace funded the complex, and a double hamam is still in use. The 1766 earthquake collapsed the minaret and dome, and the 1894 earthquake dropped the minaret through the roof. Restoration came in 1956 and 1957 and from 2007 to 2010.
