Church tradition dates the first church to 1015 and credits St Stephen, but the article says there is no clear evidence. After the Mongols destroyed the earlier church in 1241, Béla IV built a three-nave basilica from 1255 to 1269 in two phases, though another section says 1270. In the 14th century it became a Gothic hall church, and Louis I began the Maria Gate in 1370.

Matthias Corvinus built the southwest bell tower, which the article calls one of Hungary's finest Gothic works. The south tower was rebuilt in 1470 after collapsing in 1384, according to his coat of arms.

Frigyes Schulek led the rebuilding under Franz Joseph I, dated 1874 to 1896 in one section and completed in 1893 in another. His neo-Gothic work is described as the highest-quality example of Hungarian neo-Gothic architecture, and he added diamond-pattern roof tiles. The article gives no dimensions or ticket information.
