Bishop Bernhard Höting of Osnabrück started the project to build St. Mary's Cathedral in Hamburg. Arnold Güldenpfennig was the architect. Höting laid the foundation stone on August 15, 1890, and the church was consecrated on June 28, 1893. Work halted for about ten weeks in the summer of 1892 during a cholera outbreak.
The article describes the style as Neo-Romanesque. The double tower front was modeled on Bremen Cathedral at Höting's request, and the article says it probably refers to Saint Ansgar. The article calls it the first new Roman Catholic church built in Hamburg since the Reformation.
It stands in the Sankt Georg district and became the metropolitan cathedral of the Archdiocese of Hamburg in 1995.
