The current Madison Square Garden is the fourth. Charles Luckman Associates and Brisbin Brook Beynon Architects designed it, with Severud Associates as structural engineer and Turner/Del E. Webb as general contractor. Groundbreaking was on October 29, 1964, and it opened on February 11, 1968, at an original cost of $123 million.

It sits atop Pennsylvania Station between Seventh and Eighth avenues and 31st and 33rd streets, on the site of the old station's above-ground portions. Capacity is 20,012 for basketball, 18,006 for ice hockey, 20,789 for boxing and 22,000 for concerts.

Renovations cost $200 million in 1989 to 1991 and $1 billion in 2011 to 2013. The second Garden, designed by Stanford White, stood from 1890 to 1925 on East 26th Street at Madison Square, measured 200 by 485 feet (61 by 148 m) and rose 32 stories.
