A government resolution of December 23, 1954, ordered construction. The architects Alexander Vlasov, Igor Rozhin, Nikolai Ullas and Alexander Khryakov completed the design in 90 days from January 1955. The stadium was built in 450 days and opened on July 31, 1956, with a friendly attended by 100 thousand spectators.

It was the main stadium of the 1980 Summer Olympics, with 103,000 spectators. On October 20, 1982, a crowd crush at a UEFA Cup match killed 66 people. A renovation in 1996 added a roof over the stands and reduced capacity. The original stadium was demolished in 2013, except for the self-supported cover and the facade wall, and the rebuild was completed in 2017.

The current architects are listed as PA Arena, gmp Architekten and Mosproject-4. The cost is 350 million euros in the infobox. Capacity is 81,000. The 2018 World Cup final was held here on July 15, 2018, when France beat Croatia 4–2.
