Foster + Partners and Populous designed the stadium, and a joint venture of HBK Contracting and China Railway Construction Corporation built it. Construction began on April 11, 2017. The infobox gives an opening date of November 21, 2021, while the text says it was inaugurated on September 9, 2022, with the Lusail Super Cup. The article does not reconcile the two.

The stadium held 88,966 at the 2022 World Cup and hosted the final between Argentina and France on December 18, 2022. It lies about 12 miles (20 km) north of Doha in Lusail, and Lusail station is the only transit the article lists. The article gives no details on the roof or facade.

After the tournament it is expected to be reconfigured to 40,000 seats. Excess seating will be removed, and other parts of the building are to become community space with shops, cafés, athletic and education facilities, and a health clinic.
