Walter de Lacy began the castle around 1075, though the infobox gives 1066 to 1085. The article names no architect. A circular chapel of St. Mary Magdalene, modeled on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, was built in the Norman period.
The castle covers almost 5 acres (2.0 ha), about 500 by 435 feet (152 by 133 m). The Great Hall is 60 by 30 feet (18.3 by 9.1 m). The Council of Wales and the Marches sat here from 1473 to 1689.
Prince Arthur honeymooned here in 1501, and Milton's Comus was performed in 1634. A Parliamentary siege ended with its surrender in 1646. The Earl of Powis bought it in 1811 for £1,560, and it is open to the public. The article gives no prices.
