A church stood on the site in the 6th century, and the bishop's seat moved there in the early 8th century. Construction of the current cathedral began in 1060 under Bishop Anselm, later Pope Alexander II, who consecrated it in 1070. The article lists the style as Gothic and Romanesque.

Guido Bigarelli of Como began the west front in 1204. It is a vast portico of three arches, with three ranges of open galleries above, decorated with sculpture. The nave and transepts were rebuilt in the Gothic style in the 14th century. The great apse with tall columnar arcades and the campanile survive from the original work. A labyrinth is inlaid in the right pier of the portico and is believed to date from the 12th or 13th century.

Matteo Civitali built the small octagonal chapel of the Holy Face in 1484. The article gives no dimensions or materials.
