Liubartas, a son of Gediminas, built the castle as his fortified seat, which the article says began its life in the mid-14th century. The infobox gives the 14th century, and the text says the current castle was built mostly in the 1340s, reusing earlier walls. It stands above the Styr River in Lutsk and is also called the Upper Castle.

Vytautas later fortified it further against artillery and gunfire, though the article gives no date. The towers called Lubart, Švitrigaila and Bishop date from the 16th and 17th centuries. The infobox calls the Lubart Tower the main gate, but the text says the principal entrance was on the west side and is now bricked in.

The walls once enclosed St. John's Cathedral and a grand ducal palace, which no longer stand. Only the Neoclassical bishops' palace survives. The article names no style for the castle.
