Populous, formerly HOK Sport, led by Philip Johnson, designed the stadium, with Buro Happold as structural engineer. Groundbreaking was on May 22, 2008, and building ran to March 29, 2011. It opened on May 5, 2012, and hosted the athletics and the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2012 Olympics.

The stadium was converted from 2013 to 2016 with a transparent roof, retractable seating, corporate areas, toilets and concessions. The article describes the roof as 84 meters (92 yards) in one measure and 484,000 square feet (45,000 m²) in another, and says it covers every seat.

Capacity is 62,500 for football, 68,013 seated and 80,000 for concerts. The original cost was 486 million pounds, with 274 million for the 2013 to 2016 renovations. UK Athletics has been a tenant since 2015 and West Ham United since 2016.
