It has Romanesque origins, with a small rotunda, and Gothic expansion from the 1250s under Ottokar II. It is quarry stone built directly on rock. The Schlik family rebuilt it in the late 15th century. A fire in 1725 burned the castle and its church, and Wolfgang Braubock designed the Baroque church, completed in 1734.

The town of Loket owns it, and the Loket Castle Foundation runs it as a museum. It is described as a national monument.
