Archaeological surveys show settlement on the hill since about 1200 BC, and the first wooden and stone castle was probably built in the 11th century and rebuilt in the 12th. The earliest written mention is probably from late 1161. In the 15th century the castle was nearly demolished and rebuilt with a complete wall, entrance towers, a drawbridge and St. George's Chapel.
Most of the present buildings were added in the 16th and 17th centuries, with Gothic and Baroque elements. Boris Kobe proposed the present entrance design and remodeled the Tower of the Shooters from 1946 to 1953. The infobox credits Jože Plečnik, but the body gives him only the 1930s Šance promenade.
Ljubljana's municipality bought the castle on May 16, 1905 for 60,200 kronen, and residents lived there until 1963. Extensive renovation began in 1970 by the firm Ambient. The funicular opened on December 28, 2006 and is 386 feet (117.69 m) long.
