James Fitz-James Stuart, 3rd Duke of Berwick, commissioned the Liria Palace, and Ventura Rodríguez designed it around 1770. The article describes the style as Neoclassical. Rodríguez also designed the gardens with Sabatini and Jean Claude Nicolas Forestier. They were first in the formal French style and later remodeled in the English romantic style.

During the Spanish Civil War, all but the facades were destroyed. The 17th Duke of Alba and his daughter Cayetana rebuilt it, using interior drawings by Edwin Lutyens, who had died by then.

Eugénie de Montijo, the last empress consort of the French, died at the palace in 1920. It is the Madrid residence of the Dukes of Alba, and guided tours have been offered since September 19, 2019.
