Hugo von Liechtenstein, who died in 1156, built the castle around 1122 to 1136 on a fief from the Babenberg margraves. It began as a tower and was probably expanded into a larger palace complex in the 12th century. The article describes no style, dimensions or materials.

The Liechtenstein family held it into the 13th century, and it passed to the Stadeck family through a marriage. It was later pledged to various families. The Ottomans destroyed it during the 1529 siege of Vienna and again in the 1683 Battle of Vienna, and it stayed in ruins until 1884.

Johann I Joseph, Prince of Liechtenstein, bought it back in 1808. Joseph Hardtmuth carried out restoration measures from 1808 to 1816. Carl Gangolf Kayser rebuilt it in 1884 for Johann II. It was renovated in 2008 and 2009 and has been open to the public since 2010, with daily guided tours.
