The Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse was built in 1920 and put into service on December 23, 1920. It stands on the northeasternmost of the Les Eclaireurs islands in the Beagle Channel, about 5 nautical miles (9.3 kilometers) east of Ushuaia. It guards the sea entrance to the city.
The tower is brick on a masonry base, 36 feet (11 meters) tall and 10 feet (3 meters) wide at the base. The windowless wall is painted red, white and red, and the lantern housing is black. The light sits 74 feet (22.5 meters) above sea level. The article says it is often confused with the San Juan de Salvamento lighthouse.
It still operates, remote-controlled and solar-powered, and it is uninhabited and closed to the public. Short boat tours from Ushuaia make it a popular tourist destination.
