Lenzburg Castle stands on a hill about 328 feet (100 m) above the plain in the Swiss canton of Aargau. The Counts of Lenzburg built it as their seat, and the oldest parts date to the 11th century. The article gives 1077 as the first definite record of a castle. The residence, the Palas, dates to about 1100 and was about 59 feet (18 m) high.
Later rulers included the Counts of Kyburg, the Habsburgs and the city of Bern, which took the castle in 1442. The article describes a medieval fortress with Romanesque and Gothic elements and Renaissance and Baroque additions. A double curtain wall and gatehouses were built in 1625.
The canton of Aargau has owned it since 1956 through a joint foundation with the town. It is open to the public and houses the Aargau Museum.
