Work began in 1170 under an unknown master mason, and a second mason restarted it about twenty years later. Jean Cotereel finished most of the existing building, including a porch and two towers. The infobox gives completion in 1235, but the text states no date. Pope Gregory X consecrated it to the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1275. It is Gothic, and the article gives no materials.

It is 327 feet (99.75 m) long. Only one tower was completed, and it is now the belfry. After the Reformation of 1536, the colorful interior decoration was covered over. Eugène Viollet-le-Duc directed restorations in the 18th and 19th centuries, and the great organ, with about 7,000 pipes, was inaugurated in December 2003.

It is a Swiss Reformed church owned by the Evangelical Reformed Church of the Canton of Vaud. A lookout has been posted in the bell tower since 1405.
