Maharana Jagat Singh II of Mewar founded the palace as a summer residence on the island of Jag Niwas in Lake Pichola. It was rebuilt about 1743 to 1746, with the infobox giving 1746. The text also credits Rana Lakshasimha with building the palace and lake in 1362, which the article does not reconcile. The article names no architect and calls the style Rajput.
The island has a natural foundation of about 4 acres (16,000 m²). The main build is white marble, with black and white marble walls inlaid with semi-precious stones. The palace faces east, with columned courtyards, pillared terraces, fountains and gardens. An upper circular room about 21 feet (6.4 m) across has a marble-inlaid floor and a dome.
The Chandra Prakash pavilion was added between 1930 and 1955. It became a hotel in the 1960s, and Taj Hotels took over management in 1971 and added 75 rooms. A second restoration took place in 2000.
