A fortress was started on the site in 1080 to protect the repopulated village. King Henry IV built the central tower in 1460, and the Crown of Castile built an artillery bastion after reclaiming the castle in 1475. The infobox dates it to the 14th and 15th centuries. The article names no architect.

It is a medieval fortress with a large outer barbican. The inner castle has a trapezoidal plan, four towers and a square inner court, and access was originally by drawbridge. It is built of local red brick, with stone only for some details. The tower Cesare Borgia escaped from is nearly 130 feet (40 m) high.

The castle also served as a prison. Restoration ran from 1939 to 1942. It was handed to the Sección Femenina's Senior Command School in 1942, and the school closed in 1977. The Junta of Castile and León owns it.
