Kvernes Stave Church stands beside Kvernesfjorden on Averøy in Møre og Romsdal, just north of the newer Kvernes Church. It is a rectangular, single-nave stave church of the Møre type, likely built in the early fourteenth century, with records dating from 1400. The nave measures about 52 by 25 feet (16 by 7.5 meters) and the choir about 23 by 25 feet (7 by 7.5 meters), so it is among the smallest stave churches in existence.
It was rebuilt in 1633, gained a porch in 1661 to 1663 and a sacristy around 1689, and was renovated in 1776. In 1814 it served as a polling place for elections to the Constituent Assembly that wrote the Norwegian Constitution.
It closed in 1893 to 1894 when the new church was built, and the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Norwegian Monuments took it over. It is now a museum.
