Kisho Kurokawa's entry, The Spaceship, won the design competition. The stadium is a modified and enlarged version of his Toyota Stadium in Toyota City, Japan. It stands on western Krestovsky Island, where the former Kirov Stadium stood. Planning began in 2005, and construction began in late 2008.

The roof and the grass pitch are both retractable, and the pitch measures 344 by 223 feet (105 by 68 m). There are 104 skyboxes. The contractor Inzhtransstroy-Spb stopped work in July 2016 over unpaid invoices, and Metrostroy resumed it in late August 2016.

The stadium opened on April 22, 2017, with a Zenit match against Ural. The article gives conflicting figures: an original capacity of 56,196 in the text against 68,000 and 60,177 in the infobox, and a cost of 24 billion rubles in the text against 43 billion in the infobox.
