The Hungarian Ákos brothers built the castle in the 13th century on a trade route linking Transylvania, Košice and Spiš. A footnote names Filip and Detre Szárs of the Ákos family, who later took the name Bebek. It is first recorded in 1333. The article gives no exact build dates, architect or materials, and names no overall style, though it mentions a Gothic palace.
The Bebek family held it until 1566, and the Andrássy family held it from 1578 until 1918. It became a National Cultural Monument in 1961. A renovation ran from 2010 to 2011, and it reopened in April 2011.
A fire on March 10, 2012 destroyed the roof, the exhibition area in the Gothic palace and the bell tower. Accounts of the damage to the collections differ. The article does not state the current owner or access.
