Jan Dobrogost Krasiński, Voivode of Płock, built the palace from 1677 to 1683. Tylman van Gameren designed it in a French Baroque style, placed between a courtyard and a garden. The sculptor Andreas Schlüter did the decoration, and Michelangelo Palloni painted the frescoes. Interiors were only partly finished by 1699, and the full plan was never completed.
The state bought it in 1765 for the Treasury Commission. After a fire in 1783, Domenico Merlini remodeled it. Between the wars it housed the Supreme Court of Poland. The Germans burned and partly demolished it in World War II, though the outer shell stayed mostly intact.
It was revitalized from 2014 to 2016 and opened to the public on May 21, 2024. It belongs to the National Library's Special Collections, and the site is a Historic Monument of Poland.
